Organic Modern Kitchen Remodel

When we first found our home, we chose it because of its’ solid structure, high ceilings and good condition. The bones were good, but the interior selections were the total opposite of our style! As a young couple we did not have much of a budget to make it our own at the time, so we settled for a few coats of paint to take down the major eye sores (like burnt orange paint & wallpaper in the living room!). You can see a before and after on my Instagram reel below!

Remodeling Our Kitchen

Now our kitchen was at the top of our remodel list but I’m honestly not sure when we would have gotten around to updating it. Let’s face it, it’s a lot of money to do a major remodel! We originally thought we’d do minor DIY updates like painting the walls and some bigger projects like painting the cabinets to suit our style…

and then our dishwasher leaked!

It wasn’t just some minor leak, either. Water found its way underneath the tile and spread throughout the kitchen several feet. It creeped into the cabinets on either side of the washer and into the wall behind it that connected to our dining room! It completely destroyed our kitchen and I was pretty overwhelmed at the mess.

Opening up our kitchen with a load bearing wall

Once we realized how much of our kitchen was destroyed, it was time to figure out where to go with the remodel. Josiah and I always talked about taking out the wall walls that connected the kitchen to the dining and living room area but we soon found out that one of them was load bearing!

We talked to many contractors and it turned out our options were…

  1. Find a beam to cross the entire area. Unfortunately, this option ended up being very pricey.

  2. Leave a pillar up in the middle of the wall to bear the load.

At first, I was very resistant to the idea of leaving a pillar in the middle of the rooms but ultimately we decided that we couldn’t afford option 1 but it was still important to us to open up the room. Here’s a funny before and after…

Choosing our kitchen design style with my husband

Once we figured out that we could open up the room, it was time to combine our styles. We both liked an all white kitchen but I was a little more drawn to some concepts that had more natural wood and darker modern tones since it seems like things are trending that direction. After talking it through, we decided to go with an all white organic modern kitchen with some natural wood notes. Ultimately, we believe that a white kitchen is timeless and would rather choose that then be swayed with trends.
