3 Questions To Ask Before Choosing A New Year's Resolution
resolution
noun \ res·o·lu·tion \ ˌre-zə-ˈlü-shən \
a firm decision to do or not to do something.
I love this time of year. I love the idea of having goals, dreams, & aspirations. It's exciting to have a fresh start... to start from scratch. But over the years, I've realized that most of these goals and dreams of mine have one common theme. They were all about me.
What was I going to accomplish that year? How would the next year improve my life, my body, my business? How would I further my agenda?
Each goal was valuable and had purpose... but they were all focused inward instead of outward.
I'm all for self improvement and this year plenty of my goals still focus around those same types of ideas... but this time I want to flip the script.
So as I sit down and think about 2018, I'm asking myself the following questions. I hope you will consider them as well.
1. How can I use these goals to help others? If I am trying to lose weight or be healthier, how will it impact those around me? I could use it to encourage others to do the same or my improved health will help me to live longer and interact better with my loved ones. Maybe I want to grow my business... How can I use my business for good? How can I help others accomplish their goals through my business?
2. What is the motivation behind this goal?Do I want to grow my business for fame and fortune? Or do I want to grow it so I can help people? Am I trying to lose weight so that I can impress other people by my looks? Or am I trying to lose weight so that I can take care of the body that God has given me?
3. Is this goal serving my agenda or God's?Have I given my plans up to God or am I trying to create success for myself in my own way? Have I prayed about this goal? Is this where I feel God is leading me?
The good news is that most of the goals we set for ourselves are typically GOOD! We just need to look at them with the right framework... one that is rooted in following God instead of chasing what we think is right.
I hope you have an incredible 2018 filled with goals, dreams, and new beginnings. And I can't wait to see how the Lord uses them!
